Today we talked about the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. I gave some of the background regarding the feast of the passover and the feast of pentecost. The day of pentecost was the fulfillment of God's promise to send His Spirit and mirrored the events that occurred 1,200 years prior. To study more about this incredible event, click here. Jesus said in John 16:7, "But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Counselor won't come. If I do go away, he will come because I will send him to you." Below, I'm posting some of the notes from the message today that talks about the importance of the Holy Spirit. Also, we are challenging our entire church to step it up and make tomorrow (10/12/09) a day of prayer and fasting! For more information on prayer and fasting, click here
THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES YOU THE POWER
1) OF SALVATION.
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:5-6 (Romans 8:16)
2) TO WALK IN GOD’S WILL.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13 (John 14:26)
3) TO SHARE CHRIST BOLDLY.
After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:31 (1 Cor. 2:4-5)
4) TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE.
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace. Romans 8:5-6 NLT (Gal. 5:16-17)
5) TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH SPIRITUAL GIFTS.
A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church. 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT (Hebrews 2:4)
SPIRIT-FILLED ADVICE
• DON’T RESIST THE SPIRIT.
"You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!" Acts 7:51
• BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18
GOD’S PROMISE TO YOU!
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call." Acts 2:38-39
